Mona Lisa

Date: 1503-19
Medium: oil on board
Location: Louvre, Paris, France
Dimensions: 53 x 77

Mona Lisa is one of the most famous works of art in the history of painting. Enigmatic smile of a woman on this painting, also known as La Gioconda, became the subject of speculation and many rumors. The latest research shows that smile belongs to a woman after childbirth, because they found traces of the original painting, where the Mona Lisa's face is covered by the thin shawl which Florentine women wore during and direct after childbirth. There is however no certainity, that the portrait of the woman in the painting belongs to the wife of the Florentine banker del Gioconda, or to some unknownn courtesan. The painting was completed in 1506. It can be found today in the Louvre.

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). He was an important Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician and inventor. He is even considered the greatest humanist of all time. His works are special and innovative thanks to the search of compositional balance, the movement of characters and perspectives achieved by the play of light and colour. He used a distinctive colour blending technique known as sfumato. His attempt to capture the character, mood and expression of people was also significant. Among his most famous works are The Last Supper, Lady with an Ermine, Self Portrait and of course Mona Lisa, which is one of the most famous works of art in the history of painting.
