Boulevard Montmartre

Date: 1897
Medium: oil on canvas
Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA
Dimensions: 54 x 66

After spending six years in rural Éragny, Pissaro returned to Paris, where he painted several series of majestic boulevards. Exploring the view from his rooms at the Grand Hotel de Russie in early 1897, he came to the conclusion that he could observe the entire length of the boulevard from the window, and from February to April he painted two scenes of the Boulevard des Italiens on the right and a full fourteen pictures of the Boulevard Montmartre on the left (among which this work also fits). In this way, he immortalized the scene of urban life unfolding under his windows.

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903). French Impressionist painter. He was obsessed with light and its effects and painted the same subject several times to examine the effect of time of day and season. This interest probably also led him to only paint landscapes and cities – there, he could take full advantage of natural light. As an impressionist, he used vivid and bright colours. Among painters, he was popular for his communicative nature – he did not hesitate to share his experiences and was not resistant to accepting new ideas from others. His work helped develop the impressionist theory and inspired other great painters of his time, like Cézanne, Matisse, or Gauguin. He also devoted himself to pointillism (see Seurat).
