Portrait of Rosalba Peale
The painting shows the likeness of a young woman in historical clothing, probably from the early or middle 19th century. The woman has delicate features and fair skin. Her hair is dark, partially tied up and accompanied by a bow. She is wearing a red dress with a white collar. The background of the portrait is bland and dark, which enhances the details of the face and clothing. The woman's expression is mild and intent.

Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860) was an American painter and portraitist of prominent celebrities. His father was a
Classicist sculptor and like his brothers, he was named after the
Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn. Peale studied at the Royal Academy in London. After his studies, he went to Paris, where he sought inspiration from
Jacques-Louis David. He was offered the position of court painter for Napoleon. Frequently, he painted portraits of American presidents George Washington and
William Henry Harrison, which earned praise from critics. He founded the museum in Baltimore, which, already at the time, was illuminated in a revolutionary way – by gas light. In his life, he painted more than 600 paintings of historically important people. He died in 1860 in Philadelphia.
