Dutch master Peter Lely (1618-1680), whose original name was van der Faes, became famous mainly in England. His artistic career began like that of David Teniers and Gerard David at the guild of St. Luke in Haarlem. In 1641, he arrived in England, which was marked by the death of Anthony van Dyck. His paintings of religious and mythological scenes were replaced by critically well-received portraits. Thus, he could paint portraits of rulers such as Prince Rupert or Sir Rapph Bankes. He had so many commissions that, in order to paint them all, Lely painted only the head and his students then finished the body according to one of several numbered poses. He died at work while painting the portrait of the Duchess of Somerset. During his life, he collected paintings by Rubens, Tizian, and Lorain.
