This painting was part of a series of paintings that Coolidge created on the theme of "Dogs Playing" in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The entire series is known for its comical and anecdotal approach to painting and includes dogs playing cards, cigar smokers and other humorous scenes.

"Waterloo" depicts a group of dogs sitting around a table playing a gambling game of poker. Individual dogs have different expressions and poses, which adds humor to the scene. One of the most recognizable elements of this image is the dog holding an ace in his hands, a powerful hand in poker.
