Frans Hals (1581-1666) Dutch master born in Antwerp. His family had to move out after the invasion of Spanish troops in Haarlem. The influence of
Rembrandt is evident in his early works. Hals greatest fame came with portraits of wealthy burghers and group portraits of
married couples. When Hals grew up, his paintings seemed to take on seriousness and drama. Interestingly, dark colours were cheaper, so it is possible to deduce from his later works that he suffered a reduction of profits. At the end of his life, he was broke. He sold off his property and had to receive support. He died in Haarlem and left no inheritance to his family, affecting his second wife, who died in complete poverty.
