Sunset at Ivry

Date: 1869
Medium: oil on canvas

The painting depicts a landscape motif at dusk with a river scene. Factory chimneys can be seen in the background, smoke billowing from them into the western sky, which is coloured orange and blue. In the foreground is a calm river and bank with vegetation and a tree. The sky suggests the end of the day and the activity of the factories gives the scenery an industrial feel.

Jean-Baptiste Armand Guillaumin (1841-1927). One of the most active French impressionists, although, after a time, he was almost forgotten. At the Academie Suisse, he came to know Pissarro, Monet, Cezanne, Renoir, and others, and from the beginning he learned the Impressionist painting technique. Like others, he was very interested in the effects of light and the environment. After the Salon rejected him in 1863, he quit his job and devoted himself solely to painting. His work was very daring, and even Impressionists themselves did not want to let him amongst them out of fear of public reaction to his paintings. After winning a significant sum in a lottery, he developed his style to the fullest, accepting the influence of pointillism from Signac and Seurat and the first waves of modernism.
