Anders Zorn (1860-1920) was a Swedish
modern portraitist and likely the most famous artist internationally. He came from a family of farmers and brewers. At 15, he was developing his extraordinary talent at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm. He chose a somewhat unusual technique for the time: watercolour. Already in 1880, he came to attention for his talent during the student competition. He studied alternately in England and Spain in order to obtain the means to support his family, while creating his distinctive style of painting. At the beginning of the 20th century, he painted a series of pictures of naked female bathers -
Skärgårdsblomster or
After the Bath. For a long time, he lived in Paris and for his artistic contributions, he was awarded the Legion of Honour. After his stay in Paris, he went to the USA, where he exhibited and travelled. His reputation enabled him to paint portraits of American presidents Grover Cleveland and William Taft. In his old age he lived at home in Sweden, where he died of worsening health problems. His funeral was attended by the royal family and other dignitaries.
