Potter on the go

ID: #4353 | Classicism | People

The painting shows a country house surrounded by trees. There is a group of people near the house, they seem to be communicating with each other. One man is on horseback and wearing a suit, which may suggest that he is a traveler or messenger. The surrounding landscape looks peaceful and picturesque with more trees and gentle hills in the background. The atmosphere of the painting evokes scenery from centuries past, perhaps the 18th or 19th century.

Francis Wheatley (1747-1801) was an English painter who was born to a tailor. He graduated from the Royal Academy, where he first exhibited in 1778. Due to his bohemian lifestyle, he fell into debt and had to flee from creditors to Ireland. After some time, he returned to England and worked as a street painter of smaller images. He painted mostly portraits Captain Stevens or George Basil Woodd. He helped in the decoration of Vauxhall and the painting of the ceiling in Brocket Hall in Herfordshire for Lord Melbourne.
