ID: #4346 | Classicism | Portraits

The painting shows a man sitting on a brown horse in a natural setting. The man is dressed in period clothing, suggesting that this is a portrait from the 18th or early 19th century. He wears a white scarf, a light-coloured coat and white trousers. He is surrounded by trees and grass, and the background of the painting is out of focus, adding to the idyllic atmosphere. The light in the painting suggests either early morning or late afternoon.

Francis Wheatley (1747-1801) was an English painter who was born to a tailor. He graduated from the Royal Academy, where he first exhibited in 1778. Due to his bohemian lifestyle, he fell into debt and had to flee from creditors to Ireland. After some time, he returned to England and worked as a street painter of smaller images. He painted mostly portraits Captain Stevens or George Basil Woodd. He helped in the decoration of Vauxhall and the painting of the ceiling in Brocket Hall in Herfordshire for Lord Melbourne.
