Not much is known about the early life of
Dutch master Rogier van der Wyeden (1399-1464). Wyeden lived in Brussels all his life, except for one trip to Italy, which influenced the style of 15th century painters by mixing the styles of Nordic and Italian painters. His work was mainly religious (
Pieta). He created paintings with religious themes, in which he was able to capture the feelings of his characters. His fame allegedly overshadowed that of
Jan van Eyck.
