This enigmatic painting by Leonardo da Vinci was given an alternative title, Portrait of an Unknown Woman, in the early 17th century. Allegedly, there is an entire legend related to the depicted lady. It is said that she is the secret lover of Francis I of France. Her husband, according to legend, a master ironworker, after the discovery of this relationship, allows himself to be infected with the disease syphilis. Through his wife, the sexually transmitted infection reaches King Francis himself, thus revenge was completed for the husband of the unknown woman.
