The painting shows a maritime scene with several sailing ships on a rough sea. The sky is filled with massive white and grey clouds, indicating stormy weather. In the centre of the painting is a smaller ship with brown sails open and several people on board. In the background are larger vessels riding the waves. The dynamics of the water and the lighting of the scene add to the drama and realistic representation of the sea.
