Dutch artist David Teniers (1610-1690) was born in Antwerp. He was influenced by Peter Paul Rubens. His early work falls under the guild of St. Luke in Antwerp, where he painted religious motives. His paintings stand out for their play of light and shadows, colours and a realistic depiction of the characters. In 1644, Teniers became chairman of the Guild. Soon, however, he was commissioned by the Archduke Leopold Wilhelm to take care of his growing collection of images, which was captured in the fascinating image Archduke Leopold Wilhelm in his gallery in Brussels. Every time you look at it, you can find some new detail or interesting feature. Teniers bought paintings by Italian masters, which are now on display in the Museum Kunsthistorische.
