Sunset
The painting depicts an idyllic landscape at sunset with a dominant tree in the background and a richly coloured sky. A stream can be seen in the foreground, with two figures in traditional dress next to it and several grazing animals, probably sheep, in their natural habitat. The whole scene exudes tranquility and harmony, accentuated by the warm colours reflected from the clouds and the illuminated scenery.

Samuel Palmer (1805-1881) was an important British
Classical painter and graphic designer. He was born to a London bookseller and Baptist spiritualist and a nurse. From childhood, he painted churches. He was a disciple of William Blake. Under his leadership, he painted
rocky landscape in Wales. He married a woman 14 years younger and they spent their honeymoon in Italy, where Palmer garnered inspiration. His best work comes from his later period. Often, he painted large watercolour paintings illustrating Milton’s poem L Allegro and Il Penseroso. Many of his works were burned after his death by his son.
