James Wilson Morrice (1865-1924). A significant Canadian
modern landscape artist. He studied painting in Paris at the Académie Julian. His teachers were
Robert Henri and
Maurice Predergast. He often travelled between Canada and Paris and painted the beauty of nature, especially in the area around
Gibraltar and
Beaches in Tangier. After World War I, he went to Algiers and descended into alcoholism. He died at age 58 in Tunis.
