This enigmatic painting by Leonardo da Vinci was given an alternative title, Portrait of an Unknown Woman, in the early 17th century. Supposedly, there is an entire legend relating to the lady depicted. The story goes that she was the secret mistress of Francis I of France. Her husband, according to legend a master ironworker, after discovering this relationship, deliberately infected himself with the disease syphilis. Through his wife, the sexually transmitted infection reaches King Francis himself, thus completing the revenge of the unknown woman's husband.
