Versatile English
Classicist artist and baron
Frederick Leighton (1830 - 1896) attended several art schools in England and France. In his artistic journey, he was aided by meetings in Paris with the painter Ingres,
Delacroix, Corot, and
Millet. When he returned to London in 1860, he joined the group of artists called the Pre-Raphaelites, whose founding member was
Sir John Everett Millias. Leighton’s paintings represented Britain at the Paris Exhibition in 1900. Among his works were portraits, book illustrations and ancient scenes -
Jonathan and David. For his life’s work and contribution to the British art scene, Leighton won a peerage. He could enjoy it for only one day, because the day after, he died.
