Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802-1873) was an English versatile artist. Like Sir Thomas Lawrence, he was also talented from birth. In childhood, he learned from major Classicist artists of his time. It was Benjamin Robert Haydon who deepened Landseer’s knowledge of animal anatomy, which made his paintings become the top. At 13 years, he exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the age of 24, he was awarded the title of academician and at 29, he was ennobled. His paintings with animal themes were unrivalled. The painting Donald McIntyre with dogs shows the animals as great helpers and also devoted friends. He spent many days in the wilderness and The Highlands game viewing. Noteworthy is certainly The Scene from a Midsummer Night Dream. His later works reflect his melancholic and bitter nature. In 1828, he was commissioned to illustrate a novel by Sir Walter Scott. On the day of his death, October 1st, 1873, national mourning was declared, and flags were at half-mast.
