The painting depicts a stylized scene with buildings and people. The architecture in the centre of the work looks historical, with white facades and dark windows. In the foreground are figures in traditional dress. The overall atmosphere of the work has an abstract and perhaps even slightly surrealistic feel due to the treatment of colours and forms. The colours are dull and earthy with a predominance of greys, whites and browns. The overall impression is somewhat melancholic and elusive.

Roger de La Fresnaye (1885-1925). French cubist painter of aristocratic origin. La Fresnaye’s paintings are his response to cubism. Influenced particularly by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, despite his works being more colourful and decorative while being less schematic. He was drafted during the First World War, but released in 1918 due to tuberculosis, to which he succumbed a few years later.
