Fable
Date:
1883Medium:
oil on canvasLocation:
Wien Museum Karlsplatz, Vienna, AustriaDimensions:
83,5x116Fabel, in the Czech translation Bajka, is the name of a painting by the Art Nouveau painter
Gustav Klimt . This picture was painted in 1883 for the title cover of a Gerlach & Schenk book. The image is covered with many symbols and mysterious attributes. We can notice that the woman has a roll of paper in her right hand, while her left hand holds a white cloth that covers her back. The woman has Western European features, different from the classic Austrian faces that appear much more often in Klimt's paintings. An allegory of this work is depicted in the background. A woman stands outside in the wild, on a path deep in the forest. It is surrounded by vegetation and mainly wildlife. To the right of the woman, a black and white bird fills the space in the painting. A pair of animals balancing on one leg. Next to the exotic animals is a fox standing on its hind legs with its mouth open in begging form.
An interesting mix of animals leads the viewer to wonder what exactly is going on. To the right of the lovely woman, a large lion sleeps on the ground. Above the lion are shown three small white mice balancing on a branch, they create a balance between the large lion and the small mouse. The four different types of animals depicted on the canvas add an interesting element to the work and make the viewer wonder what the symbolism of each of them is in relation to the woman. A utopian theme is achieved through the artwork as all creatures come as one and live in harmony. Perhaps this is the message that a brilliant artist is trying to portray in a beautiful piece of art.

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918). As a painter, Klimt represents the best period of Vienna – a time when the works of Sigmund Freud or Mahler were developing, and Vienna was at the very least the Central European centre of culture and education. Klimt’s work combines
symbolism and Byzantine features that create the undertone of his Art Nouveau style. Klimt’s images have a special, even anxious, atmosphere that often shows the Freudian idea of erotica in any human movement and action. Klimt paints two-dimensionally, with intense colour while at the same time very gently and with refined dignity. Among Klimt’s famous works are the
Water Snakes - two women with stylized, interwoven bodies that evoke the surreal world of fantasy and sensuality. Another masterpiece is
Danae, a work inspired by Greek mythology, depicting a girl seized by Zeus, who was turned into a golden rain (Danae later gave birth to Perseus). His paintings often aroused passions and public protests, not only for their content but also for the innovative painting methods - eg.
The Girlfriends, an image of two women at a romantic meeting.
