Rocky coast

Date: 1931
Medium: oil on board
Location: Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany
Dimensions: 50.5 x 52

"Rocky Coast" (German "Felsige Küste") is an oil painting by the Swiss painter Paul Klee , created in 1929. This work is a characteristic example of Klee's style, which combines abstraction with post-impressionist and surrealist elements. "Rocky Coast" captures a landscape motif, but this motif is very abstract and the outside world is here simplified to basic shapes and patterns. Coastal rocks are depicted very simply and abstractly. Even though the painting is based on an abstract landscape composition, you can find surrealist elements in it that give the impression of dreaminess.

Klee sometimes worked with random line shapes that resemble symbols or plans. Klee created texture in the painting by using different painting techniques and patterns, which gives the painting depth and structure. Klee often used geometric shapes such as circles and squares to create abstract patterns in the painting. These shapes are seen again in "Rocky Shore." As with many of Klee's works, mystical and symbolic elements can be found in "The Rocky Coast" which can be interpreted in different ways. Paul Klee was an active artist during the modernist era, and his works reflect his experimentation with various art movements and techniques.

Klee painted picture Rocky coast in 1931. Prevailing color of this fine art print is vivid and its shape is square. Original size is 50.5 x 52. This art piece is located in Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany. This image is printed on demand - you can choose material, size and finishing.

Paul Klee (1879-1940). From childhood, he was interested in both music and painting, but as is evident, finally decided on painting - his paintings are among prized artworks. In Munich, he met Kandinsky, Franz Marc, and other artists of the then avant-garde. He met also his future wife, pianist Lily Stumpf. His work is associated with a expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. He was one of the four Die Blaue Vier (with Kandinsky, Feininger and Jawlensky). He taught at Bauhaus and the Düsseldorf Academy until 1933, when the Nazis declared his paintings a figment of a sick soul and with labelled his whole creation as degenerate art. Klee was extremely hardworking and after his death, he left behind 8926 works in Switzerland. Klee’s paintings are fragile, with a sensitive use of color (his colour mixing ranks among the world’s best) and frequent references to poetry, music and dreams.
