Lilith was the handmaiden of the Sumerian sky goddess Inanna. In Jewish mythology, Lilith was Adam's first wife - God created her from the same clay as Adam. Her union with Adam was short-lived (she allegedly reciprocated Adam's demand to make love in the missionary position: Why should I lie under you? I, too, was created from the earth and am equal to you!). When she eventually ascended and disappeared into the clouds, Adam begged God to find her. God sent the archangels Gabriel, Michael and Nathaniel to bring her back. They found her near the Red Sea as the bride of evil demons. Legend also says that she was transformed into a serpent who handed Eve an apple (which is why she is also depicted as a woman with serpents). To avenge the death of her children, Lilith killed newborns and mothers, seduced boys in their dreams and drove them mad (amulets with the text In houses where a mother and her newborn child stayed, amulets with the inscription Adam, Eve, away with Lilith were sometimes hung on the door). Another legend has it that she became the companion of the archangel Gabriel. However, there are many more legends and mysteries associated with Lilith (see the Czech entry at wikipedia.org).
