The Geographer is one of three paintings that Vermeer not only signed but also dated. The other two paintings are Astronomer and The Merchant. The geographer, dressed in Japanese robes, which were popular among scholars at the time, exudes a thirst for knowledge and the joy of exploration, both in his pose and his surroundings. As usual with Vermeer, the figure's face is illuminated by a window located on the left side. The man has his gaze fixed outwards, the thoughtfulness in his expression clearly legible. It is said that the model for Vermeer may have been his peer, Anthony van Leeuwenhoek, who was also born in Delft. Prevailing color of this fine art print is vivid and its shape is portrait.
