Pope Gregory XV.
The painting depicts a man in historical clothing sitting behind a wooden table. The man is wearing a red cloak and a red cap and is dressed in a style that suggests he may be a cardinal or a prominent church figure. An open book lies on the table in front of him and the man points to it with his right hand. His expressions and gestures appear serious and deliberate. There is an air of scholarship and authority.

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (1591-1666) was an Italian
Baroque artist whose work was mainly influenced by
Caravaggio. Barbieri mainly painted religious scenes. In 1621,
Pope Gregory XV invited him to Rome to decorate several religious buildings with frescoes. After the death of Pope, he left Rome and painted larger commissions for Christian orders -
Madonna and Baby. During his life, he made about 100 large altarpieces and another 150 works. He never married and so his property, which was considerable, was inherited by his nephew.
