Madonna and child
This painting depicts a woman in historical clothing tenderly holding and gazing at a small child in her arms. The woman is wearing a red scarf, which is complemented by a blue cloak, and is waving her hair in a turban-like hairstyle of purple. The scene exudes serenity and maternal love. Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (1591-1666) was an Italian
Baroque artist whose work was mainly influenced by
Caravaggio. Barbieri mainly painted religious scenes. In 1621,
Pope Gregory XV invited him to Rome to decorate several religious buildings with frescoes. After the death of Pope, he left Rome and painted larger commissions for Christian orders -
Madonna and Baby. During his life, he made about 100 large altarpieces and another 150 works. He never married and so his property, which was considerable, was inherited by his nephew.
