Van Gogh painted this vibrant seaside landscape with quick, loose brushstrokes. He tried to capture the color of the sea , which he described in his letter to Theo van Gogh in 1888. "A color like a mackerel, in other words, changing - you never know if it's green or purple - you don't always know if it's blue - because a second later her changing reflection took on a pink or gray hue.'
