Edward William Cooke (1811-1880) was a
Classicist painter from an artistic family. His father was an engraver, so little Edward exercised his skill from an early age. He painted mostly paintings with sea themes. His paintings depict the coast of
Karnak or
Toulon, and brought him a collaboration with the Royal Academy. He travelled a lot in Scandinavia, Africa, Italy and Spain. His works show a reference to paintings by old masters from the 17th century. In the Netherlands, he studied in detail the environment of fishermen and their boats, which he then planted into the environment of the
Nile. For these images, he was elected to the National Academy of Design.
