The painting The Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus was completed in 1959. It is a huge canvas over four meters high. The painting was commissioned by the Morse couple, American millionaire industrialists. Columbus is depicted here as a young man bringing Christianity to the New World. A model for blessing St. Helena became Dalí's wife Gala. Dali depicted himself as a kneeling monk holding a crucifix. At the bottom of the painting, Dalí placed a bumpy, round area of sea urchins to symbolize the surface of other planets that we can discover. The image has metaphorical rather than historical value. You can see the original painting at the Salvador Dali Museum in Florida.
