In 1884, he traveled Claude Monet to Bordighera, a town in the Italian Riviera, near the border with France. It was a working visit that turned from three weeks into three months. The aim of this visit was to study how best to capture the brilliant colours of the Mediterranean light on canvas. Monet himself declared that it was a "struggle with the sun". In his letters, he complained about the lush vegetation, which made it impossible for him to find a suitable motif.
