Children games

Date: 1560
Medium: oil on board
Location: Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Austria
Dimensions: 118 x 161

This painting was to be the first work in the series Ages of Man. Children's games thus rebuild youth. However, the creation of a whole series of paintings based on this motif remained only Brueghel's intention, no other similar or subsequent works have ever been discovered. Children, ranging in age from toddlers to teenagers, roll hoops, ride each other like horses, tug-of-war, do handstands, or play with dolls and other toys. They also occupied a large building that dominates the square - this is meant to symbolize that in the eyes of God all worldly concerns are just child's play. A total of eighty different activities and games that children engage in were discovered on the painting. The symbolism of the entire work lies in the futility and stupidity of human actions, children and their deep immersion in play is meant to remind adults' interest only in themselves and their own worries.
