This painting was to be the first work to fall under the Ages of Man series. Children's games thus reimagine youth. However, the creation of a series of paintings based on this motif remained merely Brueghel's intention; no other similar or related works were ever discovered. The children, who range in age between toddlers and teens, roll hoops, ride each other like horses, tug-of-war, do handstands, or play with dolls and other toys. They also occupy the large building that dominates the plaza - this is meant to symbolize that in the eyes of God, all worldly concerns are child's play. A total of eighty different activities and games that the children are engaged in were discovered in the painting. The symbolism of the whole work lies in the futility and foolishness of human action; the children and their deep immersion in play are meant to remind us that adults are only interested in themselves and their own worries.
