Pieter Brueghel creates a dialogue between the opaque snow and the reflections of the ice surface, the cold tones of the ice and the dark colors of the carefully placed trees and other vegetation. There is disagreement among experts about the authorship of the painting - some claim that Brueghel himself painted the painting, others that his apprentices and assistants also worked on it. The image also contains a number of symbols. Black birds like souls, for which hidden traps are set; ice surface as the slippery nature of human existence.
