The sun in the blue room
The painting depicts a woman sitting at a table in the interior of a room with daylight streaming in through a window that casts a strong beam of light on the floor. The room is decorated with paintings, plants and furniture, and the play of light and shadow creates a strong atmosphere. The overall composition and use of colour suggest that this is a work of art.

Anna Archer (1859-1935) was born in the Danish town of Skagen. She studied painting in Copenhagen, where she developed her own distinctive style. She painted interiors,
Room with Clematis, and the lives of ordinary men, women and children. She liked playing with colours and sunlight, which can be seen in the picture
Sun in the Blue Room. In 1880, she married and despite the social pressure on a married woman, she did not succumb and continued painting. After Anna’s death, a museum was constructed in her house. In 2004, she was eternalised on a banknote along with her husband.
