Portrait of George Basil Woodda

The painting depicts a middle-aged man in historical clothing standing outside in a forest landscape. The man is wearing a brown coat with long sleeves, white socks, black shoes and holding a black hat. His hair is styled in a period style and looks serious. The surrounding landscape is slightly idealised with a prominent tree on the left and an idyllic sky with clouds in the background.

Francis Wheatley (1747-1801) was an English painter who was born to a tailor. He graduated from the Royal Academy, where he first exhibited in 1778. Due to his bohemian lifestyle, he fell into debt and had to flee from creditors to Ireland. After some time, he returned to England and worked as a street painter of smaller images. He painted mostly portraits Captain Stevens or George Basil Woodd. He helped in the decoration of Vauxhall and the painting of the ceiling in Brocket Hall in Herfordshire for Lord Melbourne.
