Eastman, JohnsonEnglish Realistic portrait painter Eastman Johnson (1824-1906) began as a civil servant. Only when he moved to Washington in 1844 was he introduced to drawing. Eastman’s portraits began to sell well and he gained more lucrative commissions. In 1849, Eastman moved to the centre of art: Düsseldorf, Germany. He spent three years there and then went to The Hague to study Dutch master Rembrandt. He returned home due to his mother’s death. He painted images with a black-southern thematic. After the outbreak of the civil war, he focused on capturing it Heating. He taught and lectured at the National Academy of Design, where he was highly respected.
