Villa di Marlia, Lucca- Fountain

The painting depicts an idyllic garden scene with a fountain. In the foreground, part of the edge of the fountain is visible with water flowing out. In the fountain are two statues that appear to be reclining animal figures, perhaps lions or horses. Behind the fountain a pot with a citrus tree, probably a lemon tree, can be seen, which is full of ripe lemons. The background is made up of dense foliage and trees, giving the scene a peaceful and relaxed character. The lighting and shadows in the painting suggest that it is a beautiful sunny day outside.

American, mostly watercolour artist.John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) received artistic training from his mother, who tapped into his talent immediately during his childhood. She enrolled him in painting lessons in Paris. He did not complete his studies at the academy, because he liked to learn more about nature and the world around him rather than sit and learn. This was also later revealed in the image Teacher with Students. He attained world fame at the Paris Salon, where he exhibited Portrait of Mrs. X to establish his position as portraitist. Another portraitist and painter, Thomas Eakins, became one of Sargent’s subjects. His fame grew and many rich people travelled long hours just to be painted by Sargent. In 1900, when he was at the height of his fame, he began to paint more Venetian interiors - Dinner due to a lack of time. Seven years later, he closed his studio. Also noteworthy is the very famous scene depicting World War I soldiers blinded by Gas. He painted about 2000 watercolours from the realism period, they are displayed in major European museums.
