She enrolled him in painting lessons in Paris. He did not complete his studies at the academy, because he liked to learn more about nature and the world around him rather than sit and learn. This was also later revealed in the image Teacher with Students. He attained world fame at the Paris Salon, where he exhibited Portrait of Mrs. X to establish his position as portraitist. Another portraitist and painter, Thomas Eakins, became one of Sargent’s subjects. His fame grew and many rich people travelled long hours just to be painted by Sargent. In 1900, when he was at the height of his fame, he began to paint more Venetian interiors - Dinner due to a lack of time. Seven years later, he closed his studio. Also noteworthy is the very famous scene depicting World War I soldiers blinded by Gas. He painted about 2000 watercolours from the realism period, they are displayed in major European museums.
