Dancer
"Dancer" (German "Tänzerinnen") is an oil painting by the Austrian
symbolist painter
Gustav Klimt , created around 1916. This work is one of Klimt's late works and bears the hallmarks of his artistic style. The painting depicts three female figures who are depicted in the movement of a dance. This is a typical motif for Klimt, who often dealt with themes of sexuality, female beauty and movement. The dancers are dressed in various types of airy dresses that emphasize their movement and dance gestures. Klimt was known for his interest in decorative elements and ornamentation, which is visible in the detail and decoration of the dress. The painting is full of geometric and circular ornaments, which are typical of Klimt's style. These ornaments emphasize the decorative nature of his artwork.
Klimt was known for his symbolic approach to painting. Dancers can be seen as symbols of the female body and sexuality, and their movement can evoke a sense of freedom and joy. Klimt tried to capture the movement and dynamics of the dance in this painting. The dancers are depicted to appear as if they are moving and dancing directly onto the screen. The painting "Dancer" creates an impression of elegance, sensuality and decadence, which was characteristic of Klimt's late period.

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918). As a painter, Klimt represents the best period of Vienna – a time when the works of Sigmund Freud or Mahler were developing, and Vienna was at the very least the Central European centre of culture and education. Klimt’s work combines
symbolism and Byzantine features that create the undertone of his Art Nouveau style. Klimt’s images have a special, even anxious, atmosphere that often shows the Freudian idea of erotica in any human movement and action. Klimt paints two-dimensionally, with intense colour while at the same time very gently and with refined dignity. Among Klimt’s famous works are the
Water Snakes - two women with stylized, interwoven bodies that evoke the surreal world of fantasy and sensuality. Another masterpiece is
Danae, a work inspired by Greek mythology, depicting a girl seized by Zeus, who was turned into a golden rain (Danae later gave birth to Perseus). His paintings often aroused passions and public protests, not only for their content but also for the innovative painting methods - eg.
The Girlfriends, an image of two women at a romantic meeting.
