Ash Lad a troll
The painting depicts a scene in nature, with finely modelled layers of landscape painting. A figure of a boy running is placed in the foreground. His movement contrasts with the peaceful backdrop of the overgrown forest and mountains in the distance. The predominant colours are green and brown with hints of autumn foliage. The overall lighting of the painting is soft, with a feeling of late afternoon or early evening.

One of the most famous Norwegian
Expressionist artists,
Theodor Severin Kittelsen (1857-1914) was a landscape painter and illustrator of fairy tales and legends about trolls. He was born in Kragerø. Although at 11 he became an apprentice to a watchmaker, he attained an artistic education at the painting school in Oslo and at the Munich Academy. Some of his images were inspired by
Arnold Böcklin, and the rest arose from his clear and vivid imagination, as in the image
Princess Looking for Lice in the Head of a Troll. His paintings were used by many Scandinavian metal and folk metal bands for their albums. Despite the fact that his name was almost unknown in Europe, in Norway he was a highly honoured artist, for which he was knighted by King Olaf.
