Hans Baldung became an apprentice of a painter in his 16 years and that is why he has the epithet Grien (which means "Greenhorn"). He was strongly influenced by the Italian Renaissance and painted mythological characters - such as Venus on this painting. Venus, Roman goddess of love, beauty and fertility, sits right to her son, Cupid, who holds a flaming arrow as flaming symbol of love. He is blindfolded so he could not see the truth that God's love is always stronger than physical love between people.
