The Elephants
Date: 1948
One of the recurring motifs in Dalí's works are elephants. He paints them for the first time in 1944. He was inspired by the sculpture of Giovanna Lorenzo Bernini, which depicts an elephant carrying one of the Egyptian obelisks. Dalí adds extremely long and skinny legs to the elephants, which creates the impression of ghosts. The Elephant painting dates from 1948.
