William Merritt Chace (1849-1916) was an American
Impressionist painter and teacher. William grew up and worked in his father’s firm in Indianapolis. After a short stay in the Navy, he arrived in New York, where he studied art. His first painting was exhibited in 1871 at the National Academy. His talent was noticed by wealthy St. Louis collectors, who arranged a visit to Europe in exchange for paintings. In Europe, Merritt settled in Munich. From Munich, he went to
Venice to gather inspiration. On February 8th, 1887, he married Alice Bremond and fathered eight children with her. He was a model father and his children often posed for his paintings. In New York, he opened a studio and for many years he also taught his students, whom he would take to Long Island. His works are characterized by a richness and subtlety of colour both in landscape paintings -
Summer in Shinnecock Hills and even in portraits -
A Girl in Japanese Clothes.
