Jacques Laurent Agasse (1767-1849) was Swiss landscape
classicist born in Geneva. He studied at art school, but at 20 years, went to study veterinary medicine in Paris. He utilised the acquired knowledge of anatomy when painting racehorses (
Gray Hunter with a Lady’s Saddle Chestnut Hunter and Bay Hunter) and other animals (
Guanaco). He travelled between France and Switzerland until a rich Englishman asked him to paint his dog. He was so pleased with result that he offered Agasse a journey to England, where he continued painting animals. At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, he was considered the best painter of animals. They say that despite all his glory, he lived and died modestly.
