Jean-Etienne Liotard (1702-1789). Swiss painter and engraver. He applied to study at the Paris Academy; however, he was rejected. He then did contract work in Italy, Greece and Turkey. In 1758, he returned to Geneva and painted portraits for various aristocratic families. He painted for the Empress Maria Theresa very often. He focused his entire work on portraits, landscapes or still lifes. He liked to paint in pastel colours. In 1757, he married and his new wife Marie Fargues, even convinced him, for the first time in years, to shave off his groomed beard.
