Polish painter of art deco. Born Maria Górska, she was the first female artist who became a star. In the Bolshevik revolution in 1917, her husband was imprisoned, but with the Swedish consulate’s help, he was released, and travel abroad was arranged. The couple settled in Paris, where Tamara de Lempicka quickly established herself as a painter and created her own distinctive style (sometimes referred to as synthetic cubism). She painted cleanly, accurately and with elegance, and became a significant portrait painter of her time. She lived a bohemian lifestyle, within the circle of Parisian artists, and involved herself in several lesbian relationships (perhaps that is why her husband left her in 1927). Her lifelong work became popular among artists of the younger generation.
