O raném životě holandského mistra Rogier van der Wyedena (1399-1464) toho není mnoho známo. Wyeden žil v Bruselu po celý svůj život kromě jedné cesty do Itálie, která ovlivnila malířský styl 15. Století smícháním stylů severských a italských malířů. Jeho tvorba byla převážně náboženská (Pieta). Tvořil obrazy s náboženskou tématikou, u jejichž postav dokázal zachytit jejich pocity. Jeho sláva údajně zastiňovala i Jan van Eycka.
