Lilith

Date: 1887
Medium: oil on canvas

Lilith was the handmaiden of the Sumerian sky goddess Inanna. In Jewish mythology, Lilith was Adam's first wife - God has made her from the same clay as Adam. The union with Adam did not last long (allegedly, to Adam, who demanded to be made love in a missionary position, she replied: Why should I lie under you? I too was created from the earth and I am your equal!). When she finally rose up and disappeared into the clouds, Adam begged God to find her. God sent the archangels Gabriel, Michael and Natael to bring her. They found her near the Red Sea as the bride of evil demons. The legend also says that she was transformed into a snake that gave Eve an apple (which is why she is also depicted as a woman with snakes). Lilith, in order to take revenge for the death of her children, killed newborns and mothers, seduced boys in their dreams and drove them mad (in houses with a newborn sometimes amulets were hung with the text In houses where a mother lived with a newborn child, amulets were hung on the door with the inscription Adam, Eve, away with Lilith!). Another legend says that she became the companion of Archangel Gabriel. However, there are many more legends and mysteries associated with Lilith (see Czech entry wikipedia.org).

Collier painted picture Lilith in 1887. Prevailing color of this fine art print is brown and its shape is portrait. This image is printed on demand - you can choose material, size and finishing.

John Maler Collier (1850-1934). A major English painter painting in pre-Raphaelite style. In his time, he was one of the most important portraitists. Only portraits are known from his work: he painted former elites and ordinary people of England. He used clear and bright colours, and the brush strokes in his paintings are almost invisible. Most of his paintings can be found in the London National Portrait Gallery.
