Foxteriéra jménem Nipper, spolu s gramofonem, podědil po svém bratru Markovi anglický malíř Francis Barraud. Malíř si na gramofonu přehrával bratrův hlas a zaujalo ho, jak na něj reaguje onen pes. Předloha vznikla v roce 1899. Obraz po čase zakoupil výrobce gramofonů Gramophone Company a následně pod názvem His Master’s Voice přešel do vlastnictví americké firmy Victor Talking Machine Company.
